- Houston village dates back to the bronze age. Its history is covered briefly, but well, in the Wikipedia encyclopaedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston,_Renfrewshire.
- There are three old public houses all within 100 yards of the centre of the village, just a couple of minutes walk from Holmory: the Fox & Hounds (www.foxandhoundshouston.co.uk), the Cross Keys Inn and the Houston Inn. All serve good food. The Fox & Hounds has its own small brewery and its prize-winning beers are strongly recommended by real ale enthusiasts.
- Close to the Fox & Hounds is the historic mercat cross (market cross) which dates back to the 14th century. Uniquely, it has a sundial set on each of the 4 vertical sides.
- Two churches (Protestant and Roman Catholic), a Post Office, ladies hairdressers, village shop, pharmacy, doctors’ surgery and dental surgery are all within a few minutes walk.
- Also within two minutes walk from Holmory is the J G Fleming Bowling Club (outdoor bowling season April to October) and the Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club (www.strathgryffe.net).
- Fox-hunting is now illegal in Scotland but it used to be popular in Houston and the surrounding area. Houston still boasts a pack of hounds that can occasionally be seen out exercising.
- The old village is compact and beyond its boundaries is open countryside with beautiful views and lots of different walks along undulating lanes that are virtually traffic-free.
- The renowned Ingliston Equestrian Centre (www.ingliston.com) is just 10 minutes drive away.
- There are 4 golf clubs within 15 minutes drive of Holmory and many more, including internationally famous ones, within an hour's drive.
- There are ample opportunities for river and lake fishing both nearby and further afield.
- Xscape Braehead is 20 minutes drive. It includes a snow slope for skiing and tobogganing, rock climbing, cinema and 10-pin bowling among other things (www.xscape.co.uk/snow/braehead).
- Yachts can be chartered at the busy Kip Marina (www.kipmarina.co.uk), only 18 miles (35 minutes) away.
- Cinemas, supermarkets, many restaurants and car dealerships are all within 10 minutes drive and there is a modern shopping centre within 20 minutes drive.
- There are excellent road (motorways 10 minutes) and rail (Johnstone Station 10 minutes by car, 15 minutes by bus) links. Buses stopping in the village go to all neighbouring villages and to central Glasgow (35 minutes). These links make Houston one of the most sought-after areas for commuting to Glasgow and Paisley.
- There are hundreds of tourist attractions within easy driving and rail distance - see Tourist Attractions page.
